Ilmari Lappalainen “Leo” Bookshelf for Asko, 1950s
Ilmari Lappalainen “Leo” Bookshelf for Asko, 1950s
Ilmari Lappalainen designed the Leo bookshelf for Asko in Finland during the 1950s. Made from lacquered birch, it has an open sculptural construction formed by long horizontal shelves and two vertical supports.
Rounded edges and gently shaped ends soften the otherwise economical structure, giving the bookshelf a more expressive profile than a conventional rectangular case. The warm birch surface keeps the open composition visually balanced.
At 105 cm wide and 87 cm high, the shelf offers useful space for books, ceramics and decorative objects without feeling heavy. Its accessible construction also allows it to work as a low room-dividing display piece.
The bookshelf is in very good vintage condition with only minor signs of age and use. The lacquered birch surfaces are well preserved, and the overall appearance is clean and tidy. Please review all images for details.
